Are there any upcoming movies on your radar?

I don't get excited about many new movies like I used to. I haven't been inside a movie theater since The Rise of Skywalker, and a few months later the pandemic thing happened. But it wasn't even the pandemic that changed things for me. My movie theater attendance had already fallen off a year or two before. But neither do I chomp at the bit awaiting the arrival of these movies on streaming. I watch a lot of old movies, I have a nice collection of 4k blu-rays, and I catch newer films on streaming when I happen to subscribe or they come to cable / free on demand.

That said, I guess I'm looking forward to Dune: Part Two. I'll also be happy to see the Star Wars franchise get back on track with a movie that isn't so polarizing.

Criminally, I haven't yet seen Dune. I was really excited to see that when it eventually came out but never got round to it. Like you, my cinema attendance has dwindled. I can't remember what I last went to watch, it will certainly have been a family movie with the kids. I didn't even go for Indiana Jones.

There is talk of Mandalorian being a film instead of a fourth season, that would definitely get me back into the cinema.

I didn't even see Dune until this year, but it was quite good. Epic, kinda slow and ponderous, but beautifully made.

Yeah, I heard that about Mandalorian. I'm not immediately thrilled by the idea. If its great its great, and I'll eat my words. But to me The Mandalorian is the whole quiet, adventure of the week, lone wolf and cub vibe of the first season. I could have watched several seasons of that before I'd need it to develop into anything bigger.

Yeah I know what you mean. I kinda hoped that season 4 would see Mando become an ethical gun-for-hire, maybe even some black ops for the Republic, and it would be a new mission/assignment each episode, with Grogu becoming more involved in the action.

Mando season 3, or 4, might be better titled "The Mandalorians," in fitting with the expansion of the story. That would still leave room the traditional Mandalorian series to continue. Mando could appear in both shows, with episodes of of his show taking place during timeline gaps between the other series.

Just found out that James Wan is expected to direct an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "The Call of Cthulhu." Not sure how I feel about this yet. On one hand the guy has mainstream appeal, experience in horror, experience in big budget effects films. But adapting Lovecraft while keeping the spirit of the stories intact is a difficult ask. This film should be more art piece than blockbuster. Slow, quiet, contemplative, with a growing, suspenseful sense of dread. Will he, and the financial backers, be willing and able to restrain themselves? I can't help but feel that Guillermo del Toro, who had an interest in adapting another Lovecraft classic (At the Mountains of Madness) would be a much better fit for the project. That said, if Wan loves the material, and has enough creative control, I'm open to the idea that he might have the best film he's ever made left in him.

A great alternative to reading Lovecraft is listening to him. I recommend the youtube channel HorrorBabble: https://www.youtube.com/@HorrorBabble/featured
