I've seen barely any of rebels myself. I was all in for The Clone Wars, but when Disney abruptly cancelled it and pushed out Rebels I gave Rebels a try but just didn't find myself getting hooked.

I wouldn't call Rebels completely necessary, but it appears that its helpful. While I haven't seen it, I have listened to enough podcasts to understand enough of what I missed.
